Founded in 1864 by members of the public, the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association’s goal was to preserve areas of the battlefield as a memorial to the Union troops that battled there. Finally, in 1895, the lands were transferred to the Federal government and Gettysburg National Military Park was established.

An exhibit of one of the most extensive collections of Civil War relics can be viewed at The Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War during regular museum hours. Self-guided auto tours, walking tours, as well as private battlefield tours allow visitors their own pace to see the Park.
