Opening in April 2008, the new Gettysburg Cyclorama, Museum & Visitor’s Center is a short .5 miles from the Country Inn & Suites® Gettysburg Hotel.  Completion of this new facility will allow Gettysburg to be a classroom of democracy: a place that educates, inspires and honors America by promoting an understanding of past events that helped shape today’s America.

The museum and visitor center will help protect the resources of the park and the sacred ground of America’s most revered Civil War battlefield. The museum will display and care for one of the largest and most significant collections of Civil War era artifacts and memorabilia found in the nation.  In addition, portions of the battlefield will be restored including the area at the Union battle line on Cemetery Ridge, where nearly 1,000 Union soldiers were killed, wounded or captured in July 1863.  The Museum Foundation hopes to provide visitors with a better understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg and what it means to the nation.

A significant and important goal of the museum and visitor’s center is the restoration and care of the magnificent Gettysburg Cyclorama painting.  The cyclorama painting, entitled “The Battle of Gettysburg” is a colossal circular oil painting depicting the heroic but doomed charge of the Confederate infantry.  It serves as a vivid monument to the soldiers on both sides who took part in the battle.
